In its composition, asphalt consists primarily of Bitumen combined with various types of aggregate, such as sand or gravel. Pavement, conversely, is a type of concrete that contains aggregates, cement, and water.

Pavement, however, can be made from a variety of materials, including asphalt, brick, cobblestone, and even natural materials like dirt or gravel. While concrete is a popular choice for pavement because of its strength and durability, other materials may be more appropriate for certain types of projects.

Hiers Construction, paving is the process of finishing roads with asphalt. Before paving can begin, properly installing the subgrade is essential. Subgrade is the earth (or soil, or dirt) that the paving will cover. Performing a proof roll ensures a surface is ready for paving.

Asphalt mixtures: Asphalt is a mix of sand, gravel, broken stones, soft materials, and asphalt. In Marshall's Standard Test^* for designing asphalt mixtures, it was found that the percentage of asphalt required can be reduced as the density of the mixture increases.
